Bristol is a popular place to visit, but do you really know the best spots in town?
If it’s cool street food, laid back drinks and incredible gigs you’re after, you’ve come to the right place.
Karen Williams, a local who teaches refugees, is here to tell you everything you need to know about Bristol from its markets to the Christmas Steps.
So forget the tourist traps – these are the real highlights of Brizzle.
Eat at: St Nicholas Market
Tuck into street food from around the world on Corn Street — Portuguese, Moroccan, Greek, Kurdish.
My favourites are Matina for a Kurdish charcoal-grilled lamb wrap with flatbread made on the spot and Portuguese Taste for… guess what?
And there are more food stalls on Wine Street outside the market.
Drink at: The Pump House
This old Victorian pumping house on the city docks on Merchants Road in Hotwells serves locally sourced food and drinks from independent suppliers, and has a great outside terrace with views out over the water.
As you’re in Bristol, you should try the craft cider and they have a great craft beer selection.
Shop at: Gloucester Road
Not a shop but an entire street of independent shops where you can get everything from wine to wool, toys to beer and gifts to homewares.
The BS7 street is packed with small independents including restaurants and cafés for pit stops while you’re filling your bags.
Gig at: St George’s Concert Hall
This amazing music venue on Great George Street is actually a former Georgian church, so it’s beautiful.
And it has an eclectic year-round programme of classical, folk, world, jazz, reggae, candlelit concerts, you name it. You can even get married there!
Don’t miss: The Christmas Steps
The Christmas Steps is one of the few remaining medieval streets in the city, though it has been renovated over the years, with lots of independent art-related business in Grade I listed buildings to explore.
Stop off at the Christmas Steps pub at the bottom for a drink or at Ahh Toots for cake and coffee. Beware: they’re quite steep, these steps.
