Surat: The Trade and Industry Department of the US Government has issued a trade advisory to the Government of India warning to take stern action on exporting Russian products in the form of Rotterial Finished Products to the US. In particular, the United States has warned India’s diamond industry that in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war, the United States has banned diamonds from Russia’s Alrosa mines. In that case, polished diamonds and jewelery made from Russian rough diamonds cannot be exported to America.
- US pressure: Hero not prepared from Russian rough has to be written in the bill
- An Indian diamond company exporting Russian-origin diamonds will be banned in the United States
- The American lab GIA was tasked with checking whether the diamond was Russian
The United States has warned the Indian government that it could see ready-made diamonds and jewelery made from thin rough from a Russian mining company coming to the US from Surat-Mumbai. The government has informed the council and gem and jewelery exporters in India. As it is difficult to know the country of origin of the thin Russian rough, the US is asking for a text on the bill to send such diamonds or jewelery to the US stating that these diamonds are not extracted from Russian mines and are not diamonds of Russian origin. The United States has said it will ban such diamond firms if such irregularities are caught.
Dinesh Nawadia, chairman, GJEPC’s Gujarat region, said the diamond and diamond jewelery, made from thin rough, would be sent to the American lab for testing. This work has been assigned to this lab. About 30% of the rough in India, including Surat-Mumbai, comes from Russia. America, on the other hand, is a big market for India’s gem and jewelery industry. That is why industrialists avoid sending diamonds and jewels made of Russian rough to America. Because the US has banned the import of Russian diamonds.
Let me tell you that all over India when 30% of the rough comes from Russia and it is sold in western countries after the rough is polished. Due to the Russia-Ukraine war, there is a shortage of rough in Surat’s diamond industry. If US does not buy polished Russian rough and bans diamond companies exporting such diamonds, it is feared that Surat’s diamond industry will be hit hard. The possibility of a long vacation in the diamond industry cannot be ruled out. Currently, the diamond industry is offering 6-hour and Saturday-Sunday holidays instead of 8 hours. Going forward, a long vacation may also be announced.
