Just as English swimmer Phelps made his name on the world stage by winning 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympics, so Shiv Sridhar made history for Jain University by winning 9 medals including 7 gold in Khelo India-2021. The MBA student also broke many records. In an interview, Siva Sridhar said that his dream is to qualify for the Asian Championships and then make a golden dive for the country in the Olympic Games. Shiva says about his golden journey, ‘He has been swimming since the age of four and a half. However, once the idea of quitting the sport came to my mind, but the situation changed and look, today I have won 9 medals including 7 gold.
Caught a tennis racket in Coimbatore, but coach’s refusal changed the game
He said, ‘I used to live in Coimbatore. Here the father was a manager in a company. He wanted me to go to sports and so at a very young age he gave me a tennis racket. However, at that time my coach thought that I would not be able to do well in this sport and after this refusal of the coach I left the tennis court and went to the swimming pool and got involved in swimming. I was first coached by Hari Sir. When I did well at junior level under his supervision, he said that I should go to Chennai or Bangalore for advanced training.
Waving the flag of excellence in sports with MBA
“After returning to Bangalore in 2017, my performance started getting better again in 6 months, so I changed my mind,” said Siva Sridhar. I am doing MBA from Jain University. I got a lot of help here. Along with good food, I also got financial freedom. I started paying attention to my game. The professors are good here too. If I am not able to attend the class, they support the study a lot by giving the class online. I am preparing for the Asian Championship, the trial of which is to be held in Rajkot after 2 months. And I hope to qualify.
Dronacharya Award winning coach Pradeep shaped his life
“Coming here from Coimbatore has changed my life,” says Sridhar. “After coming here, I joined Dronacharya Award winning swimming coach Pradeep Kumar Sir. He helped me a lot. This is the reason why I went to South Africa in 2018 for training under the company’s scholarship. It would have been a good opportunity to go there, but my performance continued to deteriorate due to poor diet. Which disappointed me. I had to return home.
