CANADA: An 18-year-old man opened fire at an elementary school in Texas City, USA, six days ago. Twenty-three people, including 19 students, were killed. Following this incident, the sale and purchase of guns will now be banned in Canada. This has been proposed in the MP. The announcement was made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The sale and purchase of firearms will be banned
“We are introducing legislation to enforce the national moratorium on handgun ownership,” said the Prime Minister of Canada. So that handguns can no longer be bought, sold or imported anywhere in Canada. The United States has made the decision following a recent school shooting. However, the bill is yet to be passed in Parliament, while the ruling parties have less seats in Parliament.
About 1 million handguns in Canada
According to a government agency report, less than three percent of all violent crimes in Canada are related to weapons. But since 2009, the per capita rate of firing a gun on a person has nearly tripled, while the rate of using a gun for the purpose of killing or injuring has increased fivefold. Handguns were involved in about two-thirds of gun crimes in urban areas. Public Safety Minister Marco Mendisino estimated that there are about 1 million handguns in the country. Which is much higher than a decade ago. The government banned 1,500 types of military-grade or assault-style weapons in April 2020 after 23 people were killed in Canada’s worst mass shooting in rural Nova Scotia.
Gun violence is a complex problem: PM Trudeau
Commenting, PM Trudeau acknowledged that “gun violence is a complex issue. The fewer guns we have in our communities, the safer they are. People should be free to go to the supermarket, their school or their place of worship without any fear. People should be free to go to the park or have a birthday party without worrying about what will happen to the scattered bullets.
