Sri Lanka: President Gotbaya Rajapaksa fled the country in the middle of the night amidst the economic and political crisis of Sri Lanka. Amid ongoing protests in Sri Lanka, Rajapaksa has reached the Maldives with his family. They will stay there for a few days. After that they can go to Dubai. There is still confusion as to whether Rajapaksa has resigned or not. The demonstrators were further enraged by the news of the President leaving the country. Thousands of protesters have reached Parliament and the Prime Minister’s Office. The army and the opposition are facing each other. Meanwhile, a state of emergency has been imposed in Sri Lanka. Demonstrators have scaled the wall of the Prime Minister’s house. Security personnel are firing tear gas shells to stop them.
The President has been missing since last Friday, not seen at any public event. Meanwhile, preparations are underway for the appointment of the new President on July 20. According to the latest information, Gotbaya will resign only after reaching a safe place. They will go from Maldives to any country in South Asia. About which nothing is clear so far.
The Air Force said – the Ministry of Defense had ordered the delivery of the plane
Rajapakse has been flown to the Maldives by an Air Force plane. Questions are being raised on this too, on which the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) has given clarification. The SLAF said it had received an order from the Ministry of Defense to provide the aircraft, which it had to comply with. Meanwhile, the Immigration Department clarified that there is no such law to prevent the current President from leaving the country. There were also reports that India had helped Rajapaksa to leave the country. The Indian High Commission has termed such talk as rumours, in which there is no truth. Let us tell you that along with Rajapaksa there were 5 family members including his wife. Apart from this, three staff members are also with him.
According to the latest information, Rajapaksa has reached Male, the capital of Maldives. There they can go to any other country in Asia. That is being said. There are also reports that he may go to Dubai. Earlier it was said that Rajapakse has resigned on Tuesday itself, which will be announced today. But now it has also come to light that the Speaker has not yet received Rajapakse’s resignation.
It is worth mentioning that Rajapaksa will have to resign due to the worsening economic condition of Sri Lanka, which his government has failed miserably to handle. Sri Lankans were suffering from rising inflation and scarcity of goods. The situation deteriorated to such an extent that thousands of protesters stormed the Rashtrapati Bhavan. Along with this, the PM’s residence was also set on fire. Now a new government will be formed in Sri Lanka.
What will happen in Sri Lanka now?
According to Sri Lankan law, if a president vacates the chair before the end of his term, a member of parliament is replaced. This work has to be done within one month of the President’s resignation. A session of Parliament has to be convened within three days after the assent of the President. Then a day is decided when the nomination for the post of President will take place. If more than one person wants to be president, voting is done by secret ballot. The Acting President takes care of the business until a new President is elected. The acting President is always made the Prime Minister. Now after the departure of Rajapakse, Ranil Wickramasinghe will become the acting president.
