The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may have come to believe that changes in the cricket team lead to success, or perhaps they have decided to one day create an Indian cricket team in which all players are captains. This has to be said because some time ago, when the South African team came on a tour of India, after giving rest to Rohit Sharma, K. L Rahul was made captain. However, as Rahul got injured before the start of the series, Rishabh Pant was made the captain in that series. After that, in the only Test against England, Rohit Sharma got Corona and the captaincy of the team was handed over to Jasprit Bumrah. Now BCCI has made Shikhar Dhawan the captain for the ODI series to be played against West Indies.
In fact, BCCI has shocked everyone by appointing Shikhar Dhawan as the captain of Team India for the three-match ODI series against West Indies. Dhawan has previously led the team in the Sri Lanka tour last year. Now once again he will take the helm of the team. Dhawan has got this responsibility in the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma. Rohit has been rested for the West Indies tour. Apart from Rohit, Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah have also been rested.
In such a situation, the question now is that how did BCCI remember Dhawan as a captain? Dhawan, who made his mark as an opener, has not been a regular in the team for some time now. Not that his performance has been too disappointing. If we look at Dhawan’s performance in ODIs in the last one year, he has appeared for the team in only 7 matches. During this time he scored 307 runs at an average of 51.16, including three half-centuries.
The Indian team has experimented a lot for the captaincy of the team for some time now. Everyone was surprised when Dhawan got the captaincy of the team during the West Indies tour. Let us tell you that Dhawan has also accompanied the team on the England tour. He will play in the ODI series against England but the question is how did the BCCI remember Dhawan as a captain when until a few months ago it was being said that his career was over now that Rohit and KL Rahul were fit. Then there is no place for him in the team.
Indeed, the team’s regular opening batsman and vice-captain KL Rahul was ruled out of the series due to injury before the England tour and now he may take two months to recover after undergoing surgery. Due to which Dhawan entered the ODI team as an opener. After that when it came to the West Indies tour, Rohit Sharma was rested and Dhawan was seen as the captaincy option, he has been given the helm of the team. Since the beginning of this year, the same changes have been seen continuously in Team India. This is a change of new captain. Virat Kohli had decided to quit the captaincy earlier this year. After this, Rohit Sharma was made the captain of the team but he is continuously out due to injury.
Along with this, India has to host the ODI World Cup next year. In such a situation, Team India is constantly experimenting with captaincy keeping in mind the future. However, this experiment of the Indian team can also become a noose around its neck. Also the other side of this is that India is looking for a combination for the T20 World Cup in Australia, which is giving rest to the senior players while giving opportunities to the youngsters, which is also causing a lot of changes in the team management.
