New Delhi: Do you know that your day is getting mysteriously long? That is, the time of Earth’s day is increasing in a strange way, due to which even scientists do not know. If this happens, a very dire situation will arise. Because the world counts based on the atomic clock. This event will not only affect our time calculation. Due to this crash, GPS, navigation and many other technologies related to communication will also face problems.
Earth’s day is counted by its rotation on its axis. But the speed of rotation of the earth on its own axis is constantly increasing. Over the past few decades, our days have been getting shorter. The record for the shortest day was also recorded in June 2022. That means it was the shortest day in the last half century. But after the year 2020 and after this record was made, now the earth is slowing down and the days are getting longer. Even scientists do not know the reason behind this. The phone and clock display accurate 24-hour time. But the rotation of the earth in 24 hours is now taking a bit more time. Usually this change takes place over millions of years. However, scientists believe that earthquakes and storms could be the reason behind it.
The speed of the Earth’s rotation has been slowing down for the past few million years. Information has been received from the sources that behind it is the friction of the tides coming from the moon. Every century, 2.3 milliseconds are added to the time of the Earth’s day. A few million years ago, Earth’s day was only 19 hours long. But from the last 20 thousand years another process started also in the opposite direction. The way a ballet dancer keeps her arms close to her body to increase the speed of her rotation. So that it can rotate quickly on its own axis i.e. legs. Our Earth’s rotation speeds up as its mantle moves closer to its axis. Due to this, the earth’s surface is decreasing by 0.6 milliseconds every day. There are 86,400 seconds in a day on Earth.
For the past several decades, there has been a connection between the Earth’s interior structure and the surface. If large earthquakes occur, it changes the length of Earth’s day. Even if the difference is small. For example, in the year 2011, an 8.9 magnitude earthquake in Japan caused the Earth’s rotation speed to increase by 1.8 milliseconds. This has become a big event. Apart from this, many such small events keep happening, which change the time of day on earth. For example, climate change, change in seasons etc. They affect the speed of rotation of the earth from every direction.
