As with everything in the world, digitalization is unpreventable. Everything that is part of our life, such as credit cards, car keys, etc are becoming digitalized and they are becoming a part of our mobile phone apps. We scan a product or a fruit to see what it is and find stores that sell them. Now, dental treatments are becoming a part of the digitized world.
Instead of using clay moulds to acquire the impression of the patient’s mouth, we have intraoral scanners that within minutes, dentists can get the impression without making the patient feel uncomfortable such as without any gagging reflex.
What were we doing before?
Dentists had to take the impression (measurements of the teeth, length, height, width, etc) by hand using clay moulds. If you have experienced this to get a nightguard, you do know how uncomfortable that is. The technicians had to carve the shape by hand. There was lots of room for mistakes.
Most importantly, the crowns were metal based. They are reliable in terms of durability. They are durable but in terms of aesthetic, the metal might be seen underneath the crown and create black lines. They are not harmful but if only good quality material is used, which is not always the case.
The crowns/full veneers that are used now are monolithic which means that they are only zirconia. This offers a wide variety of choices in terms of design, shape, and the colour.
What is done today?
Today, digital dentistry has many equipment that helps every step of any dental treatment. The intraoral cameras are used to take a digital scan of the patients’ mouth after the preparation. The data from the digital scan and patients’ photos are used to design the optimum design, and shape along with the patients’ wishes.
The design is first seen on the patients’ mouth for the patients to check the design and the shape. The patient will be able to do adjustments to the design. After then, the colour options will be shown to the patient to choose.
