WASHINGTON: Two Sikhs have been attacked in Richmond Hill, New York, an American city. One person has been arrested after a complaint was lodged. The Indian Consulate General in New York condemned the attack, calling it “reprehensible” and said it was in contact with police investigating the incident. One person has been arrested in connection with the crime, the embassy said. He was reportedly attacked while doing a morning walk. The attack took place at the same place where a community member was attacked 10 days ago.
The assailants also took off their turbans
The assailants attacked the Sikhs and beat them with sticks. Then their turbans were also taken off. According to local media reports, the two suspects beat the men with sticks and took off their turbans. New York Attorney General Laetitia James tweeted condemning the attack and wrote, “One more heinous attack on our Sikh community in Richmond Hill.” Both men deserve justice.
An elderly Sikh was also attacked 10 days ago.
An elderly Sikh man was attacked at the same place 10 days ago. Pictures shared on social media after the April 4 attack showed an elderly Sikh man with a blood-stained turban, face and clothes. In January this year, a Sikh taxi driver was attacked at JFK International Airport, the assailant allegedly calling him a turbaned man and asking him to return to his country.
Hate crimes against Sikh community increase by 200%: Jennifer Rajkumar
Jennifer Prince, the first Punjabi American to be elected to the New York State Office, said hate crimes against the Sikh community have risen alarmingly by 200 percent in recent years. According to the information received, 9081 cases of hate crime were registered on the Stop Hate Against Asian Americans Campaign portal between March 2020 and June 2021. Of these, 4548 cases were reported in the year 2020 and 4533 cases in the year 2021. The FBI has said it will investigate the growing number of hate crimes in 2020.
