Along with this, vegetables and fruits are becoming very expensive in Pakistan.
The situation of flood crisis is being observed in many parts of Pakistan. Life of common people in Pakistan has become difficult amid these crises which are coming one after the other. The prices of vegetables are now making people cry amid inflation. According to a report, the price of tomatoes in Pakistan has reached Rs 500 per kg, while onion is Rs 400 per kg.
Due to floods, the price of vegetables increased
According to a report by dealers in Lahore’s vegetable market, the Pakistan government is considering importing tomatoes and onions from India. Let us tell you that vegetables and other crops have been severely damaged due to the terrible floods. Due to this, there has been a shortage of many essential food items including vegetables in Pakistan. Prices of not only tomatoes and onions but all vegetables are at record levels in many parts of Pakistani Punjab including Lahore.
The price can cross 700 rupees
Jawad Rizvi, a wholesaler in the Lahore market, said, “Tomatoes were sold at Rs 500 per kg and onions at Rs 400 per kg in Lahore markets on Sunday. However, in the haat held on Sunday, their prices are higher than regular markets by around Rs. 100 per kg was less. The floods have disrupted the supply of vegetables from Balochistan, Sindh and South Punjab. Due to which, the prices of all vegetables including tomatoes and onions can be seen to increase in the coming days. Rizvi expressed apprehension that the price of onion and tomato may cross Rs 700 per kg in the coming days. Similarly, potatoes can also reach Rs 120 per kg instead of Rs 40 per kg.
Thousands of acres of crops were destroyed due to floods
Floods in Balochistan and Sindh have destroyed thousands of acres of crops of tomatoes, onions and other vegetables. There are reports that the Pakistan government is considering importing tomatoes and onions from India through the Wagah border. Presently Lahore and other cities of Pakistani Punjab are getting supply of tomatoes and onions from Afghanistan through Torkham border.
Currently supplies are coming from Afghanistan
Lahore Market Committee Secretary Shahzad Cheema said, “100 containers of tomatoes and 30 containers of onions are arriving at Torkham border every day. Out of them, two containers of tomatoes and one box of onions are coming to Lahore every day. This is much less as per their demand in Lahore, the capital of Pakistani Punjab. Even vegetables like capsicum are not available due to floods. In such a situation, the government can order tomatoes and onions from India.
A rapid increase in the price of fruits
Cheema said that there is an option to import tomatoes and onions from Iran through the Taftan border in Balochistan, but the Iranian government has significantly increased the import-export tax, which will make it expensive. He said that fruit cultivation in Sindh has also suffered due to floods and the prices of dates and bananas may also see a big jump in the coming days. Supply of apples from Balochistan and other areas has also stopped.
