New Delhi: Women wrestlers continued their strike at Jantar-Mantar in Delhi on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court has agreed to hear the petition of 7 women wrestlers. Also, a notice has been issued to the Delhi Police in this case. The Supreme Court says that a notice has been issued to the Delhi Police for not registering an FIR against the wrestlers. Let it be known that for the past few days some wrestlers have been protesting WFI Chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh at Jantar-Mantar. The wrestlers approached the Supreme Court on Monday. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat and 6 other women wrestlers have filed a petition seeking an FIR against Wrestling Federation President Brij Bhushan Singh.
The wrestlers said they filed a complaint at the Connaught Place police station on April 21, but no action was taken. Advocate Kapil Sibal on behalf of the wrestlers told CJI DY Chandrachud that the wrestlers are protesting, 7 women wrestlers have complained. Sibal told the court that no FIR has been registered in this matter. On that the court said that we will hear this case on Friday. Apart from this, the Supreme Court asked to remove the names of 7 women complainants from the judicial records, so that their identities are not revealed. As the Delhi Police did not file a complaint in this regard, the SC considered the case serious and issued a notice to the Delhi Government and the Delhi Police seeking their response.
What is the matter?
Many wrestlers including Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik are demanding action against the president of the wrestling federation. Wrestlers allege that female wrestlers are sexually exploited. Along with this, the president of the federation has also been accused of despotism and arbitrariness. Vinesh Phogat said in a press conference held on Jantar-Mantar that many wrestlers, including him, are facing mental torture. On non-action on the complaint against Brijbhushan Sharan Singh, the wrestlers once again gathered at Jantar-Mantar on Sunday and held a press conference to reiterate their allegations. Even earlier in January 2023 many wrestlers along with Bajrang Punia, Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik gathered at Jantar-Mantar and kept their word. However, the wrestlers withdrew their performance following the intervention of the Sports Ministry.
