New Delhi: During an operation against drug-traffickers in Registan near the Cairo-Egypt border, a gunman wearing an Egyptian police uniform fired indiscriminately and killed three Israeli soldiers. The Israeli army said. The border fence between Israel and Egypt in the Negev desert is about 30 km south of Nitzana. According to a report published on 3 June 2023, three Israeli soldiers were killed after a gunman dressed in an Egyptian police uniform opened fire near the Egyptian border.

An Egyptian policeman shot and killed two soldiers while securing an army post on the Egyptian border early Saturday, the Israeli military said. It said the Egyptian officer and a third Israeli soldier were killed hours later in clashes inside Israeli territory. A statement said, “A member of the security forces … gave chase to the drug smugglers. During the chase, the security agent crossed the security fence (border).” And the face-to-face firing started.”
The incident occurred near the Nitzana and Al-Awjah border crossings between Israel and Egypt, 40km (25 mi) southeast of where Israel’s border with Egypt and the Gaza Strip converge. It is used to import goods from Egypt destined for Israel or the Gaza Strip. Two soldiers were found dead at an Israeli military checkpoint after their radios failed to respond. The Israeli army said a woman was among the soldiers killed. A fourth soldier was slightly injured and taken to hospital.
