Airplane etiquette is important.
Stuck in a confined space with nowhere to go but the bathroom for hours on end, doing as much as we can to make the experience pleasurable for ourselves and everyone else is important.
And now, it seems that the ultimate travel mistake has been revealed, after a TikToker said this particular faux pas ought to be illegal.
Daniel Bennett, also known as @dxnielbennett on social platforms, explained that the easiest way to recognise a good person on an airplane is to ‘see where they put their luggage’ when they first embark.
‘If they put their carry-on luggage in the overhead compartment and they put their personal item — like their backpack or their purse — under the seat, they’re a good person and they’re aware of their surroundings,’ he explained in the clip.
In contrast, he argued that travellers who place small personal items in overhead bins are the ‘worst type of person’ as those spaces are for carry-on luggage only.
It irritates Daniel so much that he wrote ‘straight to jail’ in the caption.
The reaction to the video was intense, with his 30-second clip garnering over six million views and attracted more than 4,500 comments.
‘Nothing makes me SEETHE like a small item in an overhead,’ one person wrote on TikTok.
Meanwhile, some viewers added that they have even seen flight attendants stopping travellers from placing personal items in overhead bins.
‘I love it when a flight attendant takes small items out, hands it back to the owner, and puts my carryon in instead,’ one TikToker said.
However, there was also another perspective shared and many defended people who choose to put small items in the overhead.
‘Unpopular opinion but if they only have a backpack (no carry on suitcase) that can go in the bin,’ said one defender.
It seems the saga of proper airplane etiquette continues.
