Gerard Quinlan Announces New Poetry Collection Exploring Dublin Life Memory and Human Connection

Dublin poet and writer Gerard Quinlan is set to release his latest poetry collection, Spin the Wheel Spin (Four O’Clock Buzz): Weeds between the Cobbles (See Dominick Street), a deeply reflective and vividly observed body of work rooted in the streets, voices and emotional landscapes of Dublin life.

Published by Dublin Book Publishing, the collection brings together poems that span decades of writing and publication, offering readers a strikingly personal yet universally resonant exploration of ordinary moments,
urban encounters, memory, family history and the passing of time. The work reflects Quinlan’s long-standing engagement with Ireland’s literary scene and his dedication to documenting the texture of lived experience through accessible, evocative poetry.

Drawing inspiration from everyday encounters and familiar city spaces, the collection captures the humour, tension, tenderness and quiet reflection found in ordinary life. From traffic clogged Dublin streets to silent art galleries, ploughed North Dublin fields and fading family photographs, Quinlan’s poetry invites readers to pause and reconsider the significance hidden within the routine details of modern existence.

Several poems included in the collection previously appeared in respected Irish literary publications, including Riposte, the independent Dublin broadsheet edited by poet Michael O’Flanagan. Other works were featured in publications such as The Anthology of Ver Poets and Wildeside Literary Magazine. Their inclusion in this new volume provides both long-time readers and new audiences with an opportunity to revisit Quinlan’s evolving poetic voice in a single comprehensive edition.

One of the collection’s defining strengths is its ability to balance emotional depth with clarity and restraint. Poems such as The Angry Cyclist reveal the fleeting frustrations and absurdities of daily city life, while works like Afternoon in The Art Gallery and A Tilled Field demonstrate Quinlan’s sensitivity to atmosphere, visual detail and human vulnerability. Across the collection, there is a strong sense of place and an attentiveness to how memory inhabits streets, objects and passing conversations.

The title itself evokes movement, unpredictability and the overlooked details of urban existence. “Weeds between the cobbles” becomes a recurring metaphor for resilience, persistence and unnoticed beauty surviving amid the hard surfaces of city life. Dominick Street and other recognisable Dublin locations serve not simply as settings, but as living archives of emotion, conflict and social change.

Quinlan’s writing reflects a distinctly Irish sensibility while remaining accessible to an international audience. His poems avoid unnecessary ornamentation in favour of direct observation and emotional honesty. Readers will encounter moments of humour alongside reflections on isolation, ageing, nostalgia and the fragile connections between people. The result is a collection that feels both intimate and socially aware.

The publication also highlights the enduring importance of independent literary culture in Ireland. By preserving works originally published across small magazines and broadsheets over many years, Spin the Wheel Spin (Four O’Clock Buzz) celebrates the role of grassroots publishing in sustaining contemporary poetry and creative expression.
Gerard Quinlan has long been associated with Dublin’s literary community, and this latest publication further establishes his contribution to contemporary Irish poetry. His work demonstrates a commitment to capturing authentic human experiences without pretension, allowing readers to recognise elements of themselves within the poems.
The collection will appeal to readers of modern Irish poetry, urban writing and reflective contemporary verse. It is expected to attract interest from literary audiences, independent booksellers, cultural organisations and readers seeking poetry grounded in real places and recognisable emotions.

Spin the Wheel Spin (Four O’Clock Buzz): Weeds between the Cobbles (See Dominick Street) is published by Dublin Book Publishing and will be available in paperback and hardback editions.
