Hurricane Fiona: Bridges strain in Puerto Rico in heavy flooding
HAVANA: Hurricane Fiona slammed into the Dominican Republic on Monday after wreaking havoc in Puerto Rico, before the storm damaged Puerto Rico’s power grid and caused flooding and landslides, the governor described as a ‘catastrophe’. No deaths have been reported so far but authorities said the damage caused by the storm could not be estimated at this time.
Powerful storm Fiona hit Puerto Rico on Sunday. As the heavy rains accompanying the storm looked deadly, the residents of the area closed their homes and made emergency preparations. President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency for the region. Roads were completely washed away when a newly built bridge was swept away by floodwaters after Hurricane Maria in 2017. The bridge in Utudao town was strained by the storm and flood.
The grid failure caused the largest blackout in US history, knocking out power across the island. The storm had sustained winds of 85 mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center. A heavy rain warning is still in place for Puerto due to Hurricane Fiona, with up to 30 inches of rain forecast. The Meteorological Department said the floods have reached historic levels.
