Washington: US President Joe Biden has said that American forces will protect Taiwan if China invades the self-governing island, which China claims is part of it. Biden’s comments show official US support for the island’s democracy. In an interview broadcast Sunday on CBC News’ 60 Minutes, Biden was asked whether American forces, American men and women, would defend Taiwan in the event of a Chinese invasion. In response, Biden said yes. CBC News reported that the White House said after the interview that US policy had not changed. America’s policy on Taiwan is that Washington wants to see the issue of Taiwan’s status resolved peacefully, but this policy does not say whether or not US forces can be sent there in the event of a Chinese attack?
- Will the military be sent to protect Taiwan in a media interview? The US President answered yes to that kind of question
- China strongly condemned Biden’s statement, saying it violated the One China Policy
After Biden’s interview, China said today that it will not pursue any policy of dividing the country and will take necessary measures to protect its sovereignty. China’s response came hours after Biden signaled in a CBC interview that the US would protect Taiwan’s democracy. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning said today that the US leader’s remarks seriously violate the One China Policy and violate the three joint agreements on Taiwan. Mao said that China is one and Taiwan is a part of China and the government of China is the government of all China.
