The executive committee of the SLC announced the punishment after a disciplinary inquiry conducted by a three-member panel. “Considering the seriousness of Chamika Karunaratne’s transgression, the inquiry committee has recommended to the SLC Executive Committee that the player be sternly warned not to do the same in future,” the SLC said. Along with this, a punishment should be given which does not affect his cricket career too much.

The board further said, ‘In such circumstances, several findings and recommendations of the inquiry panel have imposed a one-year ban on participation in all forms of cricket by the Executive Committee. Apart from this, a fine of 5000 US dollars (Rs. 4.08 lakh) has also been imposed against Karunaratne. Chamika Karunaratne took a total of three wickets in seven matches in the recently concluded T20 World Cup on Australian soil. Chamika Karunaratne has also accepted all the charges leveled against her.
