Three cannons found during excavations near Chowkbazar were submitted to the Collectorate
Surat: Three historic cannons found during the piling work for the underground metro route at Chowk Bazar in the city have now been placed in the ground in front of the fort. However, as per the rules of the Archeology Department, the possession of this cannon will now be handed over to the Collector and thereafter the Municipal Commissioner will have to make a representation before the Collector to get this cannon. This cannon will enhance the beauty of the historic fort of Surat, which has been restored at a cost of crores of rupees.
According to the heritage department of the Surat Municipal Corporation, the possession of the cannon found yesterday during the metro operation at Chowk Bazaar has been handed over to the District Collector. As a rule, if any archaeological material is found below two and a half feet in the ground, its possession is first handed over to the District Collector. After which the said authority has to report in writing for re-possession thereof. A presentation is likely to be made by Municipal Commissioner Shalini Agrawal in the near future to take possession of the cannon before the Collector. After the permission is given by the Collector, the restoration work of these three cannons will be started by the experts of the heritage department of the Surat Municipal Corporation.
