What are the earthquake taxes?
Let us tell you that in the year 1999 there was an earthquake in Turkey in which about 17000 or more people died. After the earthquake, it was very difficult to get back to normal in Turkey. There has been a huge economic loss. After this the government there started collecting taxes from the people there to face such natural calamities. It is called earthquake tax. According to information, the amount of this tax with the government should be around 4.6 billion dollars. However, people say that why the government is not using this amount in such a difficult time. Where is this amount being used?
A front has been opened against the government regarding the earthquake tax fund. The government has been accused of not spending much of the money collected in the name of earthquake tax for the purpose for which it was collected from the public. The government has never told all these years where and when this money was spent. , Turkish opposition parties allege that the government is abusing the earthquake tax it collects to protect cities and villages from earthquakes. Lawyer and politician Alpe Entmann says the funds were supposed to be used for urban development and disaster relief in earthquake-prone areas, but much of the money was spent on other purposes and given to builders close to the government.
The Turkish government has imposed a three-month state of emergency in the 10 provinces most affected by the earthquake. In this way, this emergency will remain till April. Also, the presidential election is going to be held in the country in May. The opposition is also calling this a political game of the Erdogan government. Turkey’s opposition is a coalition of right-wing parties and center-left parties. Kamal Kilicdaroglu may become the presidential candidate from the opposition coalition. Targeting the Erdogan government, he said that his government has not made any preparations to deal with earthquakes in all these years. Kilicdaroglu has posted a video saying that he will not meet President Erdogan on any platform. He accused Erdogan of engaging in PR activities since the earthquake.
Information has been received from the sources that apart from the opposition, the local people affected by the earthquake are also questioning the Erdogan government as to where our tax money has gone. Where is the money we paid as earthquake tax since 1999? Many such videos are going viral on social media, in which people can be seen asking the government that the government is not able to provide any special help. Interestingly, this amount collected under earthquake tax is not deposited in any special fund, but is directly included in the budget amount.
