Air raid sirens screamed throughout the night as attacks hit large swaths of the country, including western Ukraine, far from the front lines. President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attack came at a time when many people were sleeping and was an attempt by Moscow to terrorize Ukrainians again. The Russian Defense Ministry said the move was in response to a recent incursion into western Russia’s Bryansk region that Russia claimed was carried out by Ukrainian vandals. Ukraine has denied the claim and warned that Russia could use such allegations to justify escalating its attacks.
Kremlin forces began targeting Ukraine’s power supplies last October in a bid to demoralize Ukrainian citizens over the winter and force Kiev to come to the negotiating table on Russia’s terms. However, these surface-to-air attacks have since declined in favor of sporadic attacks, leading analysts to speculate that Russia has run out of ammunition. The last major bombardment took place on 16th February.
