Hong Kong: The auction of the world’s largest ruby is to be held in New York in June, following which curiosity has increased worldwide. In a preview held in Hong Kong (Hong Kong), the price of this ruby could yield more than 30 million dollars (Dolor) and he hopes to break the record of the most expensive (costly) ruby gem sold previously.
The ruby will make up the 55.22-carat gem, known as the Estrella de Fura, said Yuni Kim, an expert in the jewelery division of Sotheby’s, Asia’s financial capital, based in Hong Kong. This ruby is from Mozambique and is one of the newer and more popular origins that we see for rubies, apart from the more traditional and classic Burmese pieces.
Notably, the current world record for a ruby sold at auction was set by the Sunrise Ruby in May 2015. The 25.59 carat Burmese stone fetched $30.3 million at Sotheby’s in Geneva. The new stone, whose name means “Star of Fura” in Portuguese, was discovered in July 2022 at mining company Fura’s ruby mine in the northern region of Montepuez, Mozambique.
When rough gemstones were first discovered, there was a lot of excitement in the industry. Dev Shetty, chief executive of Fura Gems, said in a statement that the quality and size of the gem was “almost unheard of”. “We estimate Estrella de Fura to sell for over $30 million dollars,” Kim added. “Hopefully we can see him set a new record for Mozambique rubies.”
After the ruby is displayed in Hong Kong, the gem will be displayed in Taipei, China, Singapore, Geneva and Dubai before being auctioned in New York on June 8.
