The announcement of the winners for Nobel Prize 2024 has started from today i.e. Monday 7th October. The Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology has been announced today. The 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine has been awarded to Victor Ambrose and Gary Ruvkun. He has been awarded for his discovery of micro RNA.
Micro RNA shows how cells form and function in the body. Both geneticists discovered micro RNA in 1993. Human genes are made up of DNA and RNA. Micro RNA is part of basic RNA. It has evolved in the genomes of multicellular organisms over the past 500 million years. So far more than a thousand genes of different types of micro RNA have been discovered in humans.
Victor Ambrose c. elegans have researched the genetic control of developmental timing. The discovery is proving to be fundamentally important to understanding how organisms evolve and function. Although all cells in our body contain the same genes, different types of cells, such as muscle and nerve cells, perform different functions. This is possible due to gene regulation, which allows cells to “turn on” only the genes they need. Ambrose and Ruvkun's discovery of microRNAs revealed a new way for this regulation. Ambrose is currently Professor of Natural Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Ruvkun's research was conducted at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School where he is a professor of genetics.
Gary Ruvkun was fast asleep when he got the call to inform him about the Nobel Prize. The Nobel Committee woke him up and informed him of the award. Let us tell that from October 7 to October 14, the Nobel Prize will be awarded to people who have excelled in the fields of science, economics, literature and peace. These awards are being given in Stockholm, Sweden. The Nobel Prize will be awarded a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kroner i.e. approximately 8.90 crore rupees.
