AI is used by everyone today. It has advantages and disadvantages too. India has about one billion internet users. India is a big market for social media due to its large youth population. But the government is worried about the rise in cases like deepfakes, duplicate videos, fraud and misinformation. So these new rules have been brought in to prevent misuse of AI and deepfakes. The announcement comes at a time when an important global AI summit is scheduled to be held in New Delhi soon.
A new law and revised guidelines have been released to curb deepfake and misleading videos. These rules will be the responsibility of both the social media company and the users. The poster has to mention whether the content posted on social media is real or created using AI. These labels must be permanent and cannot be removed or hidden. If the AI content is published without proper label, it will be the responsibility of the respective platform. These rules have been promulgated as an amendment to the IT Rules 2021 and will come into effect from February 20. Also, the timeline for misleading content that is intended to deceive or harm someone has also been tightened. According to the court order, if there is any objectionable content on X, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and other platforms, the responsible authority has to remove it within three hours. The government can also order the removal of any material that poses a threat to national security and public order.
