The Lisbon hotel that’s perfect for a spring city break

Metro Checks In to ME Lisboa, Lisbon’s first luxury lifestyle hotel.

I’ll admit, I wasn’t entirely sure what a ‘luxury lifestyle hotel’ was supposed to be. A genuine rethink of how people travel, or a smart way of dressing up something intentionally stripped back?

When the opportunity arose to stay at ME Lisboa, one of the Portuguese capital’s newest hotels, I was curious to find out.

It’s a newly opened five-star hotel from Meliá Hotels International, one of southern Europe’s largest hotel groups, and it makes its intentions clear from the off: contemporary, confident, and built around how people move in 2026.

Location, location, location

Sitting just off Avenida da Liberdade, Lisbon’s wide boulevard lined with cafés, offices and designer storefronts, you’re within walking distance of Marquês de Pombal Square and Eduardo VII Park.

The trendy Bairro Alto is close enough to be reached on foot. Central, convenient, and well-connected, we’re off to a promising start.

It’s also just 20 minutes from the airport.

What’s the vibe?

Arrival follows a familiar five-star flow – friendly greetings, bags taken care of – but the atmosphere is refreshingly laidback.

The lobby is open and social, clean-lined but not cold, with a strong visual nod to Lisbon’s creative side without tipping into themed territory.

The staff set the tone early with relaxed polos rather than pressed shirts and ties.

On the way up to my room, I was handed my key card – wooden instead of plastic – a nod to the hotel’s push for sustainability.

What are the rooms like?

I stayed in a Beyond ME+ Suite with a street view, and the room carries on exactly where the lobby leaves off.

Spacious, calm and uncluttered, it feels designed to be lived in. Clean lines, soft lighting, and a layout and partitions that feel almost modular, like each section could be used however you see fit.

There’s a proper work desk by the window, shelves lined with ceramics and art books that reference Lisbon, and plenty of well-placed storage — the sort that lets you unpack properly rather than living out of a suitcase.

It’s a room you could happily spend a full day in, whether working, resting, or drifting between the two.

An early departure meant the bed was put through its paces sooner than planned. It’s huge and extremely comfortable, while the bathroom matches it for scale, complete with a deep tub and dual rainfall showers.

All extras are provided – dressing gowns, toothpaste, toothbrush – and I felt properly taken care of.

Oh, and worth a mention: in superior rooms, pets can stay for €80 a night.

Food and drink

The hotel has two restaurants, both worth a visit in their own right, even if you’re not staying here.

Downstairs, Fismuler – making its first appearance outside Madrid – focuses on Nordic-inspired cooking with a strong emphasis on seafood.

Given Lisbon’s proximity to the Atlantic, it felt only right to lean into it: oysters to start, seabream next, then bluefin tuna finished with blood orange aguachile and tamarillo salmorejo.

Breakfast is served in the same space, but it doesn’t feel like it. The mood shifts completely: calm, bright and unhurried.

Instead of a sprawling buffet, a waiter arrives with a tray of breads and pastries before you choose your main. Eggs Benedict one morning, Moroccan eggs the next— both excellent, and far more civilised than navigating a breakfast station half-awake.

Up on the ninth floor, Attiko takes things to another level.

This is an experience-led space built around sharing: sushi and Asian-leaning plates designed to land in the middle of the table, with decisions made collectively.

As a big sushi fan, I was very much in my element here. Portions were generous, dishes arrived at my pace, and nothing felt rushed.

I would normally raise an eyebrow at claims of a ‘culinary journey’, but here it feels justified.

Low lighting, the city glittering beyond the windows, and then – just when the room felt settled – a roaming electric violinist appeared, bow lit like a lightsaber, drifting between tables. It shouldn’t work, but it does.

What else?

Below the lobby, the KORPO Spa focuses on proper reset rather than quick pampering. I opted for the one-hour 360 massage – €150 solo or €320 for couples – and came out feeling lighter and calmer.

The spa facilities include an indoor pool, sauna, Turkish bath, sensory showers, and a crushed ice fountain, alongside treatment rooms for longer sessions.

There’s also a rooftop pool for warmer months, when Lisbon’s sunshine does what it does best.

How much does it cost?

Let’s be honest, all this does come at a cost, and the room rates reflect the hotel’s five-star positioning.

An Always ME Room for two with breakfast starts at £408, while the Beyond ME+ Suite I stayed in will set you back closer to £1,005, depending on the season.

The verdict

ME Lisboa understands how people travel now: somewhere comfortable enough to slow down, functional enough to stay productive, and social enough that you don’t feel shut away from the city.

Whether you’re in Lisbon for a long weekend or something closer to a working stay, it feels like a hotel designed to support both — without leaning too hard on either.
