Instagram has taken an important decision to strengthen the mental security of the youth. Now if a teenager repeatedly searches for sensitive words like suicide or self-harm, an alert will be sent to their parents. This feature is part of the platform's parental supervision program. This feature will be implemented in United States, United Kingdom, Australia and Canada from next week. Instagram's parent company Meta Platforms has said that the feature will be expanded to other countries in phases during 2026, but no official date has been announced for India yet. So as per the estimate, this feature is likely to reach India by the end of 2026, but the exact timeline has not been clarified yet.
The move comes in view of growing concerns about the impact of social media on mental health. Parents will be notified via email, text or WhatsApp as per the information provided in the supervision settings. Also notification will be given within the application. Instagram will also provide guidance to parents on how to communicate with children about sensitive issues. The company says that the alerts will not be sent frequently, so as to maintain their effectiveness. Instagram has clarified that direct searches for content related to suicide and self-harm will be blocked. Instead users will be directed to information from official sources such as support and helplines. According to the company, most teenagers don't search for this type of content, but if someone does, it's important to get help.
Instagram's parent company Meta has said that the same alert system will be implemented for its AI chatbots as well. Currently this feature is only available to parents and teenagers who are involved in the supervision program, but will be expanded to other countries in the near future. The move is aimed at increasing the safety of the youth by prioritizing mental health. If a person has thoughts of self-harm, seek immediate help from family, friends, or counseling services. Suicide is not a solution.
