Islamabad: The Punjab Assembly of Pakistan was in turmoil today. Some MLAs slapped Deputy Speaker Dost Muhammad Mazari and threw lots at him. Not only that, earlier some leaders of Imran Khan’s party PTI had also slapped him. The incident took place when Deputy Speaker Mazari arrived to preside over a session convened for the election of Punjab Chief Minister. According to a TV channel, some PTI legislators first threw lots at the deputy speaker and then slapped him. Some MPs even pulled their hair. The House proceedings had to be adjourned after a huge uproar.
Lota-lota slogans started after the hobala
After the uproar, some legislators started chanting Lota-Lota slogans. The Punjab Assembly session was scheduled to begin at 11.30 am local time but could not be held due to commotion. At the same time, after the incident, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Ataullah Tarar has requested the Chief Justice of the Lahore High Court to take cognizance of the matter.
Former Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf has been appointed as the new speaker
Pakistan’s parliament is set to table a no-confidence motion against former prime minister Raja Pervez Ashraf as the new speaker and deputy speaker Qasim Khan Suri, who worked in favor of the previous Imran Khan-led government, on Saturday. Ashraf, 71, of the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), is expected to be sworn in today as no other candidate had filed his nomination papers against him by the 12 noon deadline on Friday.
Assad Kaiser resigns
The presidency fell on April 9 after Asad Qaiser resigned after failing to implement the Supreme Court’s decision to file a no-confidence motion against ousted Prime Minister Khan. Ashraf is the leader of the Pakistan People’s Party who has been the Prime Minister of Pakistan and a key ally of the current coalition government.
