Bricklaying has become a lucrative profession with the increasing demand for bricklayers in the construction industry. These professionals play vital roles in the construction industry, a sector that contributes to millions of jobs in the country.

What does a bricklayer do?

Before you make up your mind to become a bricklayer, you should have a glimpse of what the job entails. Once you become a bricklayer, your work will involve building new houses, repairing walls, refurbishing decorative stonework, and working on restoration projects.

You will also be involved in building, retaining, and maintaining the interior and exterior walls. Bricklayers can also take on all types of brickwork. Most bricklaying involves working in homes and construction sites.

Your work as a bricklayer will include the following:

  • Measuring and cutting bricks to the required size
  • Measuring work area
  • Mortar mixing
  • Laying bricks
  • Checking all rows to ensure they are fixed and in place
  • Ensuring the walls are weatherproof and waterproof

How to become a bricklayer?

These are the steps to take if you want to become a professional bricklayer:

  • Complete secondary education: To become a bricklayer, you should complete your secondary education. You get the mathematical skills to become a talented bricklayer once you graduate from secondary education.
  • Training: Take a relevant course in bricklaying from a recognized institution. This should be part of your apprenticeship, which may last up to 2 years. Get induction training and become a licensed bricklayer
  • Get certified: Meet the relevant certifications to work as a bricklayer.
  • Apply for jobs: Once you have completed all your training, start applying for jobs from construction companies. Start your search for available jobs online.

What skills do you need as a bricklayer?

If you want to become a bricklayer, you should be physically fit. You should also understand the technical plans and ensure you can work as a team with others at the construction site. Understanding design technology is also important if you want to be a successful bricklayer,

Other skills that you need if you want to train in bricklaying include:

  • Adaptability: You will have to change jobs as long as you work in the construction industry.
  • Mathematics: Bricklaying requires a lot of mathematical skills. You will measure bricks and other items to ensure you use your resources well.
  • Concentration: Bricklaying takes a lot of time, which means you should be able to concentrate on one task for a long time.
  • Knowledge of all building regulations: Beware of all building codes and regulations if you want to be successful as a bricklayer.

To become a bricklayer, you need the right technical proficiency and mechanical engineering qualifications. That is why you must take a suitable bricklaying course that will qualify you as a bricklayer.

However, basic secondary education is important before you venture into bricklaying. Additionally, you should ensure you get someone to mentor you and help you sharpen your skills.
