New York: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who arrived to address the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, put India’s development story before the world. He also told the difference between India before slavery, India during slavery and India after slavery in a program organized on the completion of 75 years of Independence of India. Jaishankar said that India was so prosperous before slavery that our contribution to global GDP was one fourth. India experienced extreme poverty during slavery but today, 75 years after independence, India stands proudly as the fifth largest economy in the world.
What did Jaishankar say?
Addressing the event titled “India@75: Showcasing India UN Partnership in Action”, Jaishankar said that in the 18th century, India accounted for nearly one-fourth of the global GDP. Till mid 20th century we were one of the poorest countries due to colonialism but in 75 years of independence India stands proudly before you as the 5th largest economy in the world.
He said in his address that digital technology has successfully upgraded the food safety net in recent times. With the help of digital technology, 80 crore people have been given ration under food security in India. He said that India aims to become a developed country by 2047. Our aim is to make even our remote villages digital and we are working on it fast.
He added that more than 300 billion worth of benefits are shared digitally. About the development of India he said that we have invested more than 2 billion criticism. He said that India has worked on two major initiatives for global climate action. The first is the International Solar Alliance with France in 2015 which today has more than 100 members. Apart from this another priority of ours is the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure of which India is a founding member.
India is committed to enhancing partnerships with the world
S Jaishankar also said that India is committed to strengthening its partnership with the United Nations to ensure a brighter future for the planet. We have full faith in the principles and charter of the United Nations. In our view today the world is one family. On this occasion, the Permanent Representative to the United Nations Ruchira Kamboj said that India’s development story does not need expansion. Transformative changes are taking place in every sector in today’s India. We are proud of our traditions and we believe in our future.
Program organized on completion of 75 years of independence
India has organized this program on the occasion of completion of 75 years of independence. The program will highlight India’s development journey and the country’s contribution to global cooperation. It is expected to be addressed by the President of the 77th UN General Assembly, as well as the foreign ministers of several member states and the UN Development Program Administrator.
