Delhi: Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin during a telephone conversation on Friday reviewed bilateral cooperation in the fields of energy, trade and defense and security. Regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, Modi reiterated to Putin that dialogue and diplomacy were the only way forward, the officials said. They said the Prime Minister briefed the Russian President about India’s ongoing G-20 chairmanship and its key priorities.

“Following their meeting in Samarkand, separate from the SCO summit, the two leaders reviewed several aspects of bilateral relations including energy cooperation, trade and investment, defense and security cooperation and other key areas,” an official said.
The Prime Minister briefed President Putin about India’s ongoing chairmanship of the G-20, stating its key priorities. He expressed his eagerness to work together with the two countries during India’s chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO),’ the official added. He further said that the two leaders have agreed to be in regular contact.
The phone conversation came days after it emerged that Modi would not be visiting Russia for the annual India-Russia summit this year. Putin visited India last year for the summit. It may be mentioned here that India has been absent from several UN resolutions against Russia and has not voted against Russia.
