So this Government steer will be welcomed by everyone still living in the real world.
It says that transitioning should be extremely rare and not driven by peer pressure.
That single-sex spaces like toilets should be protected.
That teachers must not be punished for failing to use a pupil’s chosen pronouns unless the school agrees they can change gender, which it can refuse to do.
With few exceptions, parents should be involved in the decision.
This strikes us as balanced — a sharp contrast with trans militants’ demands for anyone’s self-identification to become unarguable reality, enshrined in law.
But some Tories are understandably dismayed it is not legally binding.
Every woke teacher or school can flout them and will, especially if they think a Labour Government would overturn the lot.
That is a fair assumption.
The party offered no serious response yesterday — but let its cranks set the tone.
The idiotic Corbynite Kate Osborne branded it “hate”, making “trans kids feel unsafe”.

Betrayed deal
WHAT a failure by successive Presidents that a US-UK trade deal now looks dead.
Chiefly to blame is Joe Biden, seemingly as proud of his hostility to Britain as he is of the vanishingly distant Irish roots which inspire it.
Add to that his shift towards self-harming protectionism and you have a President never destined to agree free trade even with America’s closest ally.
Our own Government did itself few favours, despite the freedoms Brexit handed us.
It foolishly pledged never to import American chicken washed in dilute chlorine — a hygienic process which only offends the Remainer Left.
Donald Trump was keen once.
Even if he gets re-elected he may find Downing Street occupied by Keir Starmer, who only wants closer ties with Brussels.
So it’s a dead duck.
