You may have heard the proverbial four moons, but for the first time in St. Petersburg, Russia, a truly amazing astronomical phenomenon has surprised scientists around the world. Curiosity was sparked when four moons appeared strangely at once in this Russian city. Residents of the famous Russian city of St. Petersburg captured this amazing and rare natural phenomenon on their cameras.
How did five moons appear at once?
As soon as the residents of St. Petersburg saw four moons in the sky, they were amazed. Everyone started filming it on their mobile phones and cameras. Russia's RT.com released a video of this, which surprisingly shows four moons appearing simultaneously. The incident has created a stir around the world with people wondering how this could have happened. What could be the reason for seeing four moons at once?
According to astronomers, this amazing phenomenon was an optical illusion called Paracelin. This phenomenon occurs when moonlight is refracted after hitting ice crystals in cold air. The hexagonal ice crystals in the cirrus clouds high in the cold, dense air of St. Petersburg act like tiny prisms, bending the moonlight at an angle of about 22 degrees. As a result bright orbs also known as “mock moons” appear on either side of the real moon. Usually two such mock moons are visible during a Paracelin, but special conditions in St. Petersburg caused several Paracelins to appear simultaneously, making it appear as if four moons were shining in the sky.
The temperature in St. Petersburg is minus 20 degrees.
St. Petersburg's extremely cold climate (below -20 degrees Celsius) helps the ice crystals form better, making the view clearer and more impressive. According to astronomers, the event becomes even more special when the moon is very bright, such as during or around a full moon. Locals and astronomy enthusiasts shared photos and videos of the event on social media, which RT and other media outlets covered.
The appearance of several moons at once is called a Moon Dog. Similarly, the phenomenon of Moon Dog is also sometimes seen, in which multiple Suns can appear simultaneously. A Parelian is the scientific version of a Sun Dog that orbits the Sun. It belongs to the halo family of phenomena and is more common in cold, dry regions of the Earth, such as the Arctic or northern Russia. Earlier in the Murmansk region three sun-like phenomena were observed which were associated with similar visual illusions.
Unique beauty of nature
Such phenomena are considered to be the unique beauty of nature. This natural wonder of the appearance of four moons is not only beautiful but also reflects the complexity of the atmosphere. People may consider it an alien or supernatural phenomenon but science attributes it to ice crystals and refraction of light. This view of St. Petersburg surprised people from all over the world and once again highlighted the unique beauty of nature. Such rare moments remind us how mysterious and fascinating our skies can be.
