Air pollution situation
According to CPCB, an AQI between 0 to 50 is considered optimal and 51 to 100 is in the satisfactory range in any field. Similarly an AQI of 101 to 200 is considered moderate, 201 to 300 weak and 301 to 400 very weak. Apart from this, an AQI between 401 and 500 is considered in the severe range. It also causes difficulty in breathing. In many Indian cities, including Delhi-NCR, on Diwali, air pollution due to burning of firecrackers has reached alarming levels and is causing AQI to rise. In Delhi, AQI has already fallen into the poor category and is expected to reach the severe category.
Gurugram’s Sector-51 recorded the highest AQI level of 679 this morning. It is followed by Rewari (AQI 543) and Dharuhera town (AQI 316) near Muzaffarpur. The World AQI was launched in 2007
The world AQI level was launched in 2007. It aims to promote air pollution awareness among citizens. An expert from the System of Air Quality and Research (SAFAR) said pollution levels increase in winter as cold air traps pollutants near the earth’s surface. Night temperature also has a significant effect on air pollution. Air pollution in Delhi-NCR reaches alarming levels due to bursting of firecrackers during Diwali.
Damage to the health of children and pregnant women
Project Director of IITM System of Air Quality Forecasting and Research (SEFAR) Dr. B.S. Murthy said that the atmospheric conditions change with the change in weather in November. Warm air over cold air prevents vertical mixing of air. Cooler air traps pollutants closer to the surface, increasing pollution levels. Air pollution can cause serious health problems in newborns.
