A flight attendant has spilled the beans on how they make your food on planes – and it’s quite a long process.

Barbara Bacilieri, who is also a content creator on TikTok (@barbiebac.ok) has shared secrets from the sky about where the food is cooked.

‘Airplanes don’t have proper kitchens as you may think,’ Barbara, from Argentina, reveals. ‘There is a dedicated area in the galley where we prep the food.

‘But flight attendants are not cooks, we don’t have training on this.’

So, how does it work?

‘All the food that you eat on the  plane is cooked in big kitchens near the airport, and they are taken to the aeroplane before every flight.

‘They are stowed in trolleys, and some of them might be refrigerated.

‘The pre-cooked meals are heated during the flight, before the inflight service, in convection ovens.’

Which leads us the next aircraft secret. While many of us may assume the galley is only used while they cook the food, it may be used for other reasons, too.

‘The galley also serves as the flight attendants’ second home, it is where we spend most of the time during the flight,’ she says.

‘Of course, we need some privacy at some times, that is why the galley has a curtain.

‘So that we can close it when we eat for example.’

Once the plane has landed and we all go on to enjoy our trips abroad, security always comes first for flight attendants.

‘When arriving at the room, flight attendants leave the door open, blocking it with their luggage,’ Barbara explains.

‘This is because if someone is in there they can run away or shout for help.

‘Then, with a hanger, they start searching for hidden persons behind the curtains, or under the bed.

‘It is very important to check inside the closet and also in the bathroom.

‘Don’t forget to also check for hidden cameras.’

Last month, a different flight attendant revealed why he’d never drink coffee on a plane. The cabin crew member, known online only as Kevin, frequently uses his TikTok (@ichbinvin) to spill the details on the inner workings of the aviation industry.

In his post, Kevin gave his take on a recent Reddit thread about the ‘dirty little secrets’ of air travel.

‘The fact the tanks rarely get cleaned where the water’s in should be the least of your concern,’ he said in a video that’s been watched more 164,000 times.

‘For me, it’s always been the way that flight attendants have to clean coffee pots.

‘For whatever reason, we’re not supposed to empty coffee pots in drains, we’re supposed to dump them down the toilet.’

He continued: ‘When you take a coffee pot and dump it in the toilet, in order to not make a huge mess everywhere, you kind of have to get a little close to the toilet.

‘And I imagine that there’s some kind of backsplash of particles, bacteria, whatever that goes directly back into the coffee pot which gets put right back into the coffee maker.’

In that case, your caffeine fix can wait until after you land!
