Japan has set a new world record by achieving internet speed of 1.20 million GB per second. With this speed you can download the entire Netflix Library or 10,000 4K movies in just one second. The 150GB game will be downloaded in 3 milliseconds. This India’s average internet speed is about 1.6 million times faster than 63.55 Mbps. It is 35 million times faster than the average American Internet speed.
Earlier, the record was in the name of Japan. In March 2024, Japan achieved 402 terabits per second (TBPS) ie 50,250 gigabytes per second. This record was made using a standard optical fiber cable. This record was obtained by a joint team of Japan’s National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT) and Sumitomo Electric Industries.
They set this record by sending data at 1.02 petabytes per second in June. It uses 19-core optical fiber technology. It is as thin as today’s standard fiber cable (0.125 mm) but has 19 different core.
When will this technology reach the general public
Currently this pace is achieved in the lab and it will take time to make it available to the general public. There are 3 main challenges for this. Many investments are needed to implement such high-speed systems commercially. Existing devices and routers are not ready to handle such a speed. This technology works with the existing fiber cable but an upgrade will be required to implement it on a large scale.
